What time of year should I plant Christmas cactus seeds?

Post by skrinkle »

I cross pollinated my two Christmas cacti and they’ve produced berries. The berries still don’t feel like they’re ready to be plucked, but they’ve been growing since around Christmas time. I’m assuming they’ll be ready in the fall, so does that mean fall is the appropriate time to plant the seeds? Or should I save them for spring?

If you can provide warmth and light, you can sow any time of the year. Otherwise, waiting until spring is good.

From my experience with Christmas cactus fruit, they ripen and stay on the plant indefinitely, so it's a case of deciding when to pick them rather than (with most cacti) either waiting for them to dry up, split open, fall off or loosen so they come off easily when pulled.
