Re: Books to identify mammillaria
I'm following the Mammillaria handbook of John Pilbean. Good descriptions and pictures.
Re: Books to identify mammillaria
The best Pilbeam book on Mammillaria's is one of his earlier ones in the Cactus File Handbook series and is much better than his later ones for identification purposes I find. Obviously it lacks a few of the new species like Mammillaria bertholdii, but contains most of the rest.

I think it is out of print now, but you may find it from time to time on the Web or EBAY or specialist cactus book dealers.
As usual beware of stupid prices well exceeding their original prices some booksellers put on second-hand out of print books. One listed it at £155 second-hand!
Just a quick web search brought up a new copy if you click on cacti in the left hand column. The first one listed under Pilbeam without an illustration, but make sure it is the Cactus File Handbook one since he did several Mammillaria ones over the years,:-
