Re: remove spines
Interesting It does seems to be a lot of work, just to peel one pad for spines.. Is it used mainly as an ingredient in different meals or is it eaten ‘alone’ so to speak? It looks to be Opuntiapads of some sort? Is it farmed or just picked were it’s found?dinfelu wrote: ↑Mon Nov 02, 2020 7:58 pm I leave you a video of how to peel (remove spines) a cactus

Re: remove spines
There are varieties of several opuntioids that have no spines at all. Are they not preferred?
I have read that opuntia greens reduce your appetite. I wouldn't want that, I like my food too much.

I leave you a link that talks about one of the largest producers of opuntia ficus ... and it is within Mexico City, perhaps that is why it is the type of opuntia we prefer
I don't think that opuntia reduces the appetite, what I can tell you is that it is very versatile, you can make salads, it can accompany meats, you can take it in juice, you can combine it with almost all kinds of food ... and something I'm forgetting to say .... its fruits are delicious and coincide with the hot season ... you can eat it alone, you can make jams, ice cream, they are delicious

Re: remove spines
I looked it up and I had misremembered about opuntia pad fibre. It does not reduce appetite. It binds fat from the meal you eat it with, so you don't absorb as much fat.

In Andalusia during the chumbo season there are many poor people who eat far too much of the prickly pear fruit, because it is free to harvest from the countryside. A nurse told me that one of the most unpleasant duties he had while working there was to manually unpack the compacted solid result from the colons of those people.

I've always used a potato peeler to remove spines

Fishhook cacti are like cats, they only like to be petted in one direction
