Leca balls-no good?

Post by Mrs.Green »

I am planning to repot some cacti I bought recently since they seems to be growing in peat. I will have to mix my own soil since I don’t have any cactussoil available . What I do have is peatfree soil, sand/grit ( varying in size from 2 to 5 mm) from a freshwater beach and lecaballs. I don’t have perlite, I would have to order it online . I have noticed that lecaballs aren’t mentioned much or at all when talking about cactussoil/ mix.
Why? :)

So, leca keep some humidity and drainage.

After reading the Stoneaters aricle I stared to keep my cactuses on more than 95% mineral substrate (granite+gneis) that give extreme good drainage. Then it is good with leca that Keep some humidity and keep down weight.

It still keep much less humidity than compost or peat.

The cactuses are healthy on mineral substrate pluss leca, but they may have a slower growth.
