Re: Cacti collection from Samara
Late last night I finally dared to sow cactus seeds.
I treated the pot and sand with boiling water. Also I treated seeds with H2O2 about 10 minutes. Right after that I started to shift seeds to sand with counting - 149 seeds. To be honest it's more than I expected. Now I understand that pot should be bigger.
After that I covered the pot by film.
About 20 hours have passed and I often look through the film with condensate. Probably for faster sprout.

It's a mix. Manufacturer promises Echinopsises, Mammillarias, Rebutias, Coryphantas and so on. I will learn to sow and after that purchase interesting particular seeds like some Gymnocalyciums, Ariocarpuses, Obregonia and so on.
One question, is it ok on English to add 's' to name of genus for plural?

Alexander, your English is EXCELLENT!
Ya nje gavaryu baruski, ya gavarju pafinnski y paangliski. How's that? I lived in Finland on the eastern border a while and picked up enough to say 'rooki vyerka!' and a few other fun things....gdje tualjiet?...dvai, dvai! bystre, bystre! That is off the top of my head...typos included of course. Cyrillic is readable by me... but I'm slow at it.....like real slow.
But to answer your question...it's a Latin thing and I believe that those species ending in the letter "i" get another "i" to denote plural.
Those ending in 'a' get an 'ae'...that's my uneducated guess.
But in the end I think it's safe to say that the majority or English speakers on this forum know exactly what you mean. Who speaks Latin as their native tongue anyway....nobody, right?
Keep the posts coming!

Thanks Steve!
It's really interesting why you picked up to say 'rooki vverkh' (hands up)?
Also 'gdje tualjet?' (where is the toilet?) is really helpful question
Regarding the seeds. I have saved pack where seeds were. A few minutes ago I read description and it says that the seeds sprout in 8-10 days. It's more than I expected. Maybe I should put pot to a shelf and forget about this for a while.

Alexander

Uhhh....." hands up!" is the phrase the Finnish Army taught all their soldiers. I lived there during the Cold War - late 70's.
Kind of a joke thing between the two countries. Finnish is the world's most difficult language for English speaking Americans to learn. After that Navajo, then some Asian languages. I'm fluent in Finnish..not so much in Russian. Navajo? only a couple of words. Tlinget? same.
So the Russian Army learned two phrases in Finnish - "Hands up! and I give up!"...The Finns learned the same phrases in Russian. ha ha!
I have sewn seeds for the first time...okay second time...the first time the opuntia seeds rotted. I forgot to scarify them. Now I know better.
So this time I chipped some Sclerocactus seeds and some Echinocactus texensis seeds to see if they will germinate or not.
Not my forté....yet. But I have been inspired by a friend in Bosnia, Jasmin, who is Metsolt on here. Among others having seed success. So why not jump in, right?

I also think that this is G. schickendantzii and number of spines for ID should be counted on adult flowering plants (6 - 7 radials only for this species) but population differences are also possible. Most Eriosyce have spines curved upwards and E. curvispina has 1 or 2 prominent centrals at this age.A1essandro wrote: ↑Thu Nov 19, 2020 9:52 pmThank you Steve.
I think you are right. Besides ElieEstephane mentioned this subspecies in ID topic. Also I have seedling of with field number L473 and it's grayish brown (but seedling is about 1cm diameter). So, I believe that this species is various and maybe it can have more or less spines.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

Re: Cacti collection from Samara
As I promised - my new cacti.
Mammillaria longimamma - I know that this species has thick tap root which I really like. But this plant has some troubles with root due to incorrect care.
Coryphanta compacta I think. It's my first Coryphanta. This species has beautiful spines.
Gymnocalycium horridispinum I like Gymnocalyciums (maybe it's my favourite genus) and I like long mighty spines
Gymnocalycium mihanovichii - also I like cacti with interesting colour of stem. I have long wanted this cactus for my collection.
Mammillaria bombycina - just pretty

Re: Cacti collection from Samara
I have a lot of news regarding my collection.
The day before yesterday I found fungus (mold?) on some seeds. I douched sand and seeds with H2O2.
Yesterday I found first seedlings, so today there are 7 seedlings.
Also yesterday I bought new G.mihanovichii and two more packs of mix seeds (35 seeds) that I sow today.
Maybe it's a main of news - yesterday one cacti grower gave me the remainder of her collection because she cannot care correctly anymore. It's about 20 cacti with different age. Some species that I have long wanted.
Some species I cannot identify. I will prepare photos and ask in the relevant section of forum.

Re: Cacti collection from Samara
It's just a note that sowing to sand without any porous minerals is not really good idea.
Now I have two pots with seeds/seedlings, one of them contains only sand, another one - zeolite and 2-3mm of sand on the surface. Second one much more better retains moisture. More precisely, sand retains moisture not as good as i expected.
4 days and 10 hours after sowing:

Re: Cacti collection from Samara
I have not much space for collection in the loggia, about 1m x 45cm, so I'm going to repot most of my cacti to smaller pots.
This is first one. This is Mammillaria lasiacantha SB 64.
To be honest I expected bigger roots because I use 100% mineral substrate.
This is pot 4x4cm instead of 7.5x7x5 pots. But I have not many single plants for repotting to such small pots. Most of cacti I'm going to repot to 5x5cm pots with 8cm height. I hope after repotting I will be able to place much more cacti.

Re: Cacti collection from Samara
After one week approximately 50% of seeds germinated (not easy to count but I counted about 75-80 seedlings).
Also I have a question. Is this seedling doomed?
