Not sure about those but you can try forming some of those at least on top of the stems.

The Astrophytum myriostigmas are still firmly attached to the substrate, no alarming wiggliness. I begin to wonder if there was something wrong with the three first ones I bought, since they all died within a month after purchase. One of the myriostigmas had a flower bud when I bought it but I doubt it will open, unless we gets even better weather. The same plant is producing another bud. Do myriostigma buds go dormant or do they dry up and fall off if they are produced to late in the year?

I have never had any blooms with my astros in Canada. I guess these need more heat or some greenhouse conditions. And overwatering may just kill them in no time. Plants from stores come from completely different environment.

The Myriostigmas yes..I lost one late autumn /early winter. It just got soft and shriveled. Placed same spot and given the same amount of water as the other ones. Then we had a bit of nice weather with sun and warmer temps in late april, so I took a chance and gave the Myriostigmas the first watering since september. Two weeks later I noticed a different coloured spot on one of them and sure, it quickly got soft and shriveled up. The other ones seems to have survived watering. In fact there are signs of buds on one of them and another one flowered a couple a days ago.

As mentioned before, when staring with cacti again I didn’t expect much flowering and saw that as an rare bonus. Well I did knew that I could expect flowers on some species but given the fact that I grow indoors only, I didn’t took the chances of seeing flowers, into consideration. In hindsight I wouldn’t have bought columnar cacti that I probably never will see any flowers on. I didn’t understood why people ‘only’ posted pics of their flowering cacti before, I can see why now..

I managed to ‘catch’ the first flower on my Gymnocalycium quelhianum almost fully open. Beautiful flower in my opinion. It’s a pity though that the slightest hint of any clouds ‘nearby’ and the flowers on the Gymnos starts closing up.

I have missed several flowers on other Gymnos, just because I wasn’t at home when the right conditions occurred. ( from my limited experience; high temperatures and full sun).

We have very high temperatures ( for our area anyway) the last week, touching 30 degrees celsius, almost every day. Not to my liking but the cacti seems to feel right at home. Two new flowerbuds on a couple of the Astrophytum myriostigmas and buds on several other cacti. The Mammillarias still are flowering . So far, my favourite genus in cacti. Unfortunately not the easiest to ID for a beginner and I am pretty sure I have several duplicats if not triplicats ( is that a valid word at all?)

It is very hot ( for our area at least) here at the moment, daytime temperatures close to 30 degrees celsius. It’s to hot to being outside for a northern soul Flowers and buds on several cacti, areal treat for a windowsill grower like me

The Selenicereus sp. I have had for years but no flowers on it yet, last year I repotted the plant and started giving it a lot more water and fertilerzer than before. It took off, growing like it had never done before and sending out a lot of arial roots that sticks to every surface apart from the window. Not long ago I discovered it have two buds! The buds are really growing fast and I expect the biggest one to open soon.
The lovely little Parodia mutabilis is flowering again and the small E.subdenuta(?) have buds again, hoping it don’t abort the buds this year.

More flowers on the Mamms too and the Hoya kerri have buds also, wonderful fragrance when the flowers open. Last but not least, a new flower on one of the A.myriostigmas and more buds on the way

..and the first flower on the Selenicereus has opened up Unfortunately this is the best wiev I can get of the bloom, since the window is bigh up and not easy accessible.

This is the first Selenicereus flower I have seen IRL and I must say it’s pretty impressive, both it’s beauty and size.


I got this Tephrocactus nearly two years ago and it has just stood there, nothing happened. Suddenly two new segments appeared and is growing rapidly

Even the closed flower on the myriostigma is pretty.
