2 new bois joined the spiky crew

Post by bionik »

Hi cacti connoisseurs. I just got two new bois to join my collection at the local supermarket (though I promised to myself I won't get anymore because I have no more room for them - still I got them because they were so adorable  ). I made some pics of them just after leaving the shop. I repotted them meanwhile. So do you know who they might be?

Ist may be a Weberbaureocereus or Haageocereus

2nd may be Notocactus (Parodia-Eriocactus) schumannianus, the brown spined type not v. nigrispinus.

I already have Haageocereus versicolor, it reminds me of it but has white bristles. I'm not sure what's the difference between Weber's guy genus and Haageocereus.

And about Parodia, I presumed it is most likely a member of that genus, but those striped dark and light spines intrigued me.

Thanks for the reply :)

"I already have Haageocereus versicolor, it reminds me of it but has white bristles."

The botanical name "versicolor" by the way means "having various colours". Therefore other spine colours can be found in that species.

Re. Haageocereus/Weberbaureocereus:-

Ritter introduced many species of Haageocereus into cultivation in the 1960's since virtually every valley in that region has its own distinct form.

Notocactus (Parodia) schumanniana is a member of the genus that used to be called Eriocactus if you recognised that as a genus before it was lumped into Parodia. In the latest classification by Joel Lode' I believe he has segregated most of them out again. The other members of that genus were E. claviceps, E. warasii, E. magnificus and E. leninghausii

Puzzled here. Bois is French for wood. Is that what you call cacti?

"Bois" is an intentional misspelling of the word "boys". In this case, it was used as a term of endearment for OP's new cacti.
