Glorioustache's Collection

Post by Glorioustache »

Hello.

I will be posting here photos of my collection. I started collecting Cacti around 2 and a half years ago so my collection is still quite small. I have done my best to properly identify each one of them but if you think that I have misidentified some of them please let me know.

I live in the tropics near the equator but due to the high altitude in my city I enjoy a really nice temperate climate with an average yearly temperature of around 24°C during the day and 16°C at night, though it can go as high as 27°C during the day and as low as 11°C at night. The humidity here is always at 100%, no exception. Therefore I use a potting mix which consists of 70% pumice and 30% worm castings, which has given me great results. All of my cacti grow under the full hot blazing high altitude tropical sun that we have here, no shade cloth whatsoever. I only cover them with a transparent nylon during the rainy season of the year then remove it for the dry season.

Thanks a lot Alejandro! It has been growing really nice indeed. It has just started to grow 8 new offsets! 🤩 It will be really nice to watch the great mound that it will become in a couple of years.

This fellow is about 38cm in height. Notice this year's new growth at the top with the lighter coloured spines and the ring of darker than the rest of the spines of the body just below it which were the ones at the apex of it while it was resting the past dry season. Also notice the difference in spination density at the base of it compared to the top part, the spines at the oldest parts seem to grow longer and denser as it ages, specially the radial ones, almost completely covering the body of the cactus. Beautiful species

Hello Mike! Thank you for the comment. It is really a beauty! I repotted it in January of this year from a much smaller pot and it seems to be truly happy. I have not let its spines get wet when watering it to avoid messing up the neatness of them. I love the spiralling pattern that it has, like following the Fibonacci sequence. I think that most Mammillaria have it but it looks really nice on this one as the radial spines tend to also grow following the same pattern and create some type of like lines between the longer hooked central spines. It is always a joy to watch her each morning under the sun.

I bought this Astrophytum asterias about a month ago. When I was repotting it about 10 days ago I found out that its roots were rotting and it was also severely dehydrated due to that so I decided to chop them off with the hope of re-rooting it inspired by a member of this group that goes by Hanazono. Today it was placed finally over recently watered potting mix after callusing over for those 10 days and I will begin to water it as I normally do with all my other Cacti, letting the potting mix dry between waterings and will be kept in the shade in a bright spot. It needs to root quickly since it is already dehydrated and quite small, about 4cm in diameter.

This Gymnocalycium baldianum is another recent acquisition for the collection that got repotted about a week ago and was watered today for the first time after the repotting. I will slowly acclimatise it to my full sun growing conditions with the rest of the collection to avoid getting it sunburned. It should take around 1 and 2 weeks for that.

These other two are also new acquisitions for the collection. Unfortunately when repotting the Astrophytum myriostigma I found that it had a severe infestation of root mealybugs and the roots were already rotted, even starting to go up into the stem so I decided to chop them off then kept cutting the stem until no rot could be longer seen. I left the cut callusing over for about 12 days and it was finally put today on a pot filled with my potting mix then well watered. We'll see what happens.

This other one is a Pilosocereus flexibilispinus that got repotted about 10 days ago and has already been watered once after the repotting. It is currently on the phase of acclimatisation to my full sun growing conditions and will soon join the rest of the collection on my terrace.
