Is this a flower bud?

Post by loyall »

I believe this small club-shaped plant is Parodia erubescens alias Notocactus schlosseri. Differing opinions appreciated. It is 2½ inches tall by 2 inches wide. There is a small orange fuzzy bump near the center of growth on the top. Do you think this is a flower bud?

Certainly looks like a flower bud! A bit early though. Mine flowers starting in May and all through July.

Another view two weeks later. Pretty certain now that it is a flower bud.

24 days since first photo. Definitely a flower bud. I wonder if the blossom will be yellow.

Hey Mike,
Thanks for your support. Question though. Please don't take offense. I like the cute aphorism on all your posts, but shouldn't you correct the spelling of spines? 😉

It has been 34 days since the first photo when I asked if this is a flower bud. Today it blossomed. Aiko was correct. It is yellow with a dark red pistil. I only wish that more buds were forming.

Yep, a typical Notocactus flower. It should gradually produce increasing numbers of them each year, just have patience. Large specimens can produce a massive display of flowers.
