Help IDing these Mammillaria cacti

Post by Angel »

Hey everyone,

I just bought this two little cacti and I'm trying to identify them

This is the first one. I think it might be a M. peninsularis (mostly because of the globose-flattened stem) but those big beautiful spines confuse me

This is the second one. I think it might be a M. tonalensis

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance,
Ángel

The first one reminds me Mammillaria compressa. Seeing some flowers will help.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

Hi George, thanks for your input

It surely looks like a M. compressa althouh M. compressa has a globular-columnar stem. Maybe mine is too young and its stem is a bit flattened.

I agree with 7george on the 1st ID.

As to your 2nd guess, I disagree that it is Mammillaria_tonalensis for 2 reasons:

1. Mammillaria_tonalensis is rare in cultivation.
2. Your plant has weaker spines than are typical.

I suspect the 2nd one might be Mammillaria occidentalis or Mammillaria thornberi

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

I discarded M. mazatanensis (M. occidentalis) and M. thornberi because those two have multiple hooked central spines and my little cactus has only one on each areole.

I have very little expirience with the genus and maybe those features I think are distinctive (the globose-flattened steam from the first one or the single hooked central spine on the second cactus) may change over time.
