My Cactus has been struggling for some time.. His roots seem real firm and strong still, but his spines on top have slowly been turning yellow and squishy. I think he is dead now?
I cannot find much information online about them dying from the top down, is it possible he has rotted from the top even though he is yellow and not black anywhere? Most of what I can find online says yellowing means too much or too little sun and/or water, but no way to tell which it is.
His top spines are now falling over when I poke them, and he went from slightly green parts and slightly firm last week to completely yellow and squishy when I checked on him this morning.
This is him this morning (March 2022):
Previously, I had noticed some reddish/orange spots on top, but could not figure out what was causing them. I thought it could be a pest, but I could not find anything like his spots. I thought red spider mites because of the color, but there is no white webs, only my Cactus's own white fuzzies. This photo was taken in November 2021:

Since December I tried to give him more sun thinking maybe the yellowing was from lack of light, but now I worry I gave him too much light and have shriveled him out. I started misting him with water and a anti-pest spray every 2-3 weeks in case it was a pest I could not see. I tried posting on this forum months ago, but the site was down.
Please share if there is any way to save him or if he is fully dead. If he is dead, what is the best way to dispose of him in NYC?

Re: Cactus Turned Yellow
He's gone. Sad - you brought him back from the brink of death before, but there's no hope this time.
Looks like those orange spots were some kind of infection. Nothing was going to help at that point.
