Re: My modest collection
I like the Escobaria. I have some too and keep them bone dry in the winter out in my unheated garage in a southern window. Temps can get as low as -5F, but only for a day or so. More like 0F for maybe three days. 10F for 12 days.

Awesome! They would love the much needed winter rest. I have few as well but E minima and E abdita are my favourites. Sadly they won't flower much for me as it's year round hot and humid here.jerrytheplater wrote: ↑Sat Apr 30, 2022 9:22 pm I like the Escobaria. Re: My modest collection
How about keeping them in a refrigerator over an artificial "winter"?abhikjha wrote: ↑Sun May 01, 2022 5:40 amAwesome! They would love the much needed winter rest. Now, I haven't tried that, but I don't think it would be a good idea... It might encourage rot?jerrytheplater wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 2:07 amHow about keeping them in a refrigerator over an artificial "winter"?abhikjha wrote: ↑Sun May 01, 2022 5:40 amAwesome! Re: My modest collection
Could have been possible with a small collection and a dedicated fridge but practically not possible at all in my small apartment setup. My wife will throw me out for surejerrytheplater wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 2:07 amHow about keeping them in a refrigerator over an artificial "winter"?abhikjha wrote: ↑Sun May 01, 2022 5:40 amAwesome! Re: My modest collection
I doubt rot would happen. Refrigerators are dry. Your plant should be going into winter bone dry. I have kept Sarracenia pitcher plant rhizomes in moist peat moss in bags in my refrigerator over winters. There rot is possible.Aeonium2003 wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 2:34 amNow, I haven't tried that, but I don't think it would be a good idea... Re: My modest collection
Ha Ha. I understand your wife's perspective. But, I do know a person who really likes growing Nepenthes pitcher plants where some need very cool growing conditions. He lives in an apartment and converted a refrigerator into a growing chamber to grow his plants. He modified the thermostat and wired it for LED lights. Its pretty cool, but beyond my dedication level for sure.abhikjha wrote: ↑Tue May 03, 2022 4:14 amCould have been possible with a small collection and a dedicated fridge but practically not possible at all in my small apartment setup.
