Inspection of root ball question.

Post by JCcares »

Last week I bought 8 new cacti and thanks to you all good people on this “cactiguide” blog I am gaining the confidence necessary for them to thrive in my care.

Questions. Some of the images below seems to be a call Small hole or tunnel, something doesn’t look right to me a newbie. Can someone zoom in and let me know why they look that way please?

The buds what will happen to them will they bloom?

I just washed the root core this morning and soak them and hydrogen peroxide diluted ti 1% for 30 minutes. When when should I pot them in new soil? You can see they are getting no direct sunlight and plenty of ventilation mild temperature around 80F

Some of the roots are long long long in length when I pot them what is the best way in the pot?

I do not see any dead roots but I am a newbie do you see any?

Lastly please do not tell my wife what I did in the kitchen sink as she was sleeping this morning in fact don’t even mention these new 8 cacti she will kill me if she finds out how much I spent 😂

I repeat I am new at the lovely beautiful cacti hobby any warnings advice helps would be greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU 🙏🏽

Hi 🙂 The holes in the top of the cacti ( first pics) looks like mechanical damage and I wouldn’t worry about them. They will probably heal without problems. The hole in the bottom of one of yout cacti is more alarming ( to me anyway, I am no expert at all!) It looks like the epidemis of the cactus is ‘broken’ and peeling off around the hole and thats probably not a good sign. It could be that the hole has healed ( callused) though. Habe you tried looking into the hole with a flashlight?

Buds can be surprisingly though is my experience, ( but others fall off just looking to hard at them..) I have had buds that survived hot , soapy baths, to my surprise.

Regarding the wife; as a general rule/advise; don’t keep spouses that are adversed to ones hobbies! 😜
