Good cacti and succulent videos?

Post by Mrs.Green »

I do prefer reading but from time to time I have tried finding good/interesting videos about cacti/succulents. There sure is a lot out there but.. finding good/interesting ones are a different matter. A lot of the makers seems to be just as keen on highlighting themselves and how funny and cool they are or are overly enthusiastic about everything, the cacti or the interviewee seems to be just excuses for LOOK AT ME!

I would like to see videos both from habitat, about genera / species and interviews with collectors/ growers. But without the drama..

Adding this video, just as an example on normal acting people , more of this please! 👍 🙂

Probably a case of video enthusiasts being largely beginners when growing cacti and the cactus growers are amateurs when it comes to making videos? Both have specialised in the different hobbies.

Never done a video, only travelogue. Even the BCSS Forum only has travelogues not videos. I'm not on Facebook and similar Social Media but from the little I have seen you may find more video type material on there?

Desert Plants of Avalon does sort of general collector videos on you tube.

You may find some more specialist in videos of cacti in habitat.

I think I know who you're talking about in terms of the "look at me" YouTubers haha.

I enjoy Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't on YouTube. He's a very knowledgeable botanist who make videos in habitat. He does have a foul mouth...but the information about the plants, growing environment, and geological details is invaluable. He doesn't specifically do cactus and succulent videos but he has done quite a lot. Everything from Welwitschia to Aztekium.

A good video on the ev0lution of cacti here.

Also other CSSA lectures, though sometimes quality is not great as they are videoed directly off the projection screen rather than images taken off the speakers computer.

Hi Mrs. Green,
Have a look at this few private gardens, lots of succulents and cacti growing outdoor. Here in the south east of Australia, night temperature in winter can be -1°C or 0°C, lots of rain and sometime frost in winter.
It shows quite a lots of succulents and cacti can survive and thrive in cool climate area.

Thank you all for links, I have watched a lot already 🙂 DaveW; I really appreciated the ev0lution videos , Mauseth’s ‘leaf’video and the habitat videos.

Keith; Your ‘home’- video; I am really impressed that you remembers were you got cactus this and that from. Apart from that; The video was blessfully avoid of that awful muzac so many people put on their videos and both you and your son talked as normal persons, no ‘amaaazing or wooonderful’ in every other sentence..or dumb jokes and the cacti was the main caracters in the video, not the people. Thumbs up! Almost forgot to mention; very nice plants!

If anyone have more links, please post them. I am sure I am not the only one who are interested in seeing interesting videos 🙂

Although not a video, but a slide show presentation on growing cacti outdoors in cold and wet winter areas. The author, John N. Spain, spent many decades growing cacti outdoors. He was a founder of the Connecticut Cactus and Succulent Society. He was a very generous gentleman. https://www.ctcactussociety.org/john-spain-slide-shows

Thank you Jerrytheplather 🙂 Interesting and a bit surreal to look at the snow covered cacti, yes I do know it’s ‘possible’ but deep down, I feel that cacti and snow doesn’t match . The seed pods on the Opuntia imbricata; really beautiful!

Not a video about cacti, but it is a really nice video of South African succulents. Really encapsulates why people fall in love with fat plants.

There are a few on the American Society Channel, but not always in order so you may have to search for part 1 with some first.

For the inexperienced "Desert Plants of Avalon" do a series of videos.
