Hello from Orange County, CA

Post by .ilUli. »

Hello, I‘m Uli and I‘ve had cacti on and off my whole life, ever since I was given my first Mammillaria bocasana as a young teen. I say I had cacti, because they were just cute plants I placed on my window sill, watered on occasion and that was that. Recently I started wanting to know more about these plants, particularly how I can encourage them to bloom more, something that my window sill cacti rarely did. I looked into placing them outdoors, which I find surprisingly challenging given my pretty ideal location. The problem is that with our small backyard I struggle to find a spot that gets enough sun, yet not necessarily midday sun, and doesn’t get hit by the sprinklers. Also, I do want to be able to see and enjoy my collection from inside the house. As it is I see some re-landscaping of the backyard in my near future

I only have a small collection, 17, including a 30 year old Golden Barrel that I had the brilliant idea to pay attention to and move it to a more prominent spot in the yard only to expose it to too much sun too quickly.
