Tell me what kind of cactus you have

Post by yans111 »

Hello :salute:
I'm Eugene and I'm a fifth-year student and I'm writing my thesis about cacti and their species
I would like you to help me with some statistical questions
Please tell me what kind of cactus you have and how many cacti at home of all species? :study:
Thank you so much in advance! \:D/

I have around 900 plants in most cactus genera in my greenhouse, therefore far too many to list. I don't grow any "Other Succulents". Our collections in the UK range from a few plants on a windowsill to the few larger collections with well over 1000 plants. The Continentals and E, European collections are similar sized I believe. I think with collectors you stop counting past a certain point and just guess how many you have. Rather like primitive tribal arithmetic that goes "1 to ten" and when you run out of fingers "many"!

You can get an idea of many UK greenhouse collections with the greenhouse tours in the second link below.

An example of one of our larger specialist collections of just Rebutia/Aylostera and Sulcorebutia. Good luck working the statistics out for that. :D

More here if you search for collection tours: -

So called "National Collections" in the UK are usually owned by registered amateur enthusiastic private individuals, seldom State or Public Institutions since those tend to be general collections for the public rather than comprehensive ultra-specialist botanical collections.

Should have added you may also get some idea of collections size in Members Blogs.

viewforum.php?f=31

I think you have probably already realised you will have troubles compiling meaningful statistics on so many diverse members collections. You would probably have more luck compiling the average numbers of recognised species in a genus or with classification itself, but that would also vary according to which authority on classification you used. The two main classifications in use at present are David Hunts "New Cactus Lexicon" and Joel Lode's "Taxonomy of the Cactaceae". but these are expensive if you don't have library access to them.

As an example of Joel Lode's classification.

Anyway, good luck with your thesis.

Statistics:
currently 151 succulents of 117 genus.
The average age is 8 years, 10 months.
The "Methusalem" is a Pachypodium lamerei (succulent, not cactus) of 24.5 years.
The oldest "real cactus" is a Mammillaria karwinskiana nejapensis with 23.5 years.

Hope that helps? -- Again: Good luck.

Now really??? And everybody making such a fuss.
Well, probably he had thought that we were just waiting to give him the dope, and when we didn't, he lost interest.

Thank you for the tip, DaveW.

hahahahaha...one has to admit, the impassioned cultivation of cacti is not the total aspiration of everyone. Perhaps he lost interest, or found a more reasonable topic.
