What species is this Gymnocalycium?

If you have a cactus plant and need help identifying it, this is the place to post it.

What species is this Gymnocalycium?

Post by jerrytheplater »

I have been growing this Gymnocalycium since at least June 28, 2009, as that is the earliest photo I've found without going back and looking at my prints from the 35mm SLR. So I really think I've been growing it longer than this since it is in a pot I would have used, and not a nursery pot. But I don't know the species. I will guess it is either G. saglionis or G. schickendantzii.

Edit: now that I posted the photos, I am not sure the 2009 photo is the same plant. The spines look much thicker in that plant compared to the plant as it exists today. By the way, the plant is in a 6" pot now.

I only have one intervening photo of this plant, and it was taken in 2010. Not much to see in it as it is pretty blurry due to enlarging it. So I'm not posting it.

I did take some photos Sept 21, 2022:

Looks like G. schickendantzii to me. Got any photos of it in bloom?

I'm pretty sure it bloomed at work this spring, but that was about the time I had my heart attack. Plus, I don't normally have a camera with me. Still need to get a smart phone. My memory of the flower is very dim. Next spring.

But, I'm retired now and all my plants are at home and I'm giving them much better care now than previously.

Do you think the first photo is the same plant?

I just went back and looked at the photo I took on April 3, 2021 when I repotted this plant. It had a bud on it at that time. Don't recall if it bloomed.

That purplish tint reminds me more G. pflanzii, but this can be (less likely) G. saglionis that blooms at larger size generally. Not a G. schickendantzii because of central spines.

I took a photo of this plant blooming on Saturday. It was on its way out, but I was away for a week. It is a pink flower. I have to get it off of my camera and edit it. Tomorrow I hope. Just want to bump this post.

Is this Gymnocalycium pflanzii?

The pot size is 5 inches in diameter, or 12.7 cm. diameter. That is the furthest the flower opened. It seems the spines prevent it from fully opening.

This is pflanzii. Saglionis has unique tubeless flowers among gymnocalycium.

Cool! I have a small G.pflanzii less than 3cm / 1.5in wide. Now I know what I am looking forward to.
