Has anyone had aerial roots grow on their desert cacti?

Sure, it's fairly common. Can be a sign of problems with the roots, or just that the plant is very root bound. It's normal, though, for a cactus that's growing prostrate to root down along the stem, which yours is trying to do. It still could be root bound.

It could also be that there is moisture on the cactus. If dehydrated but there is moisture on its skin, it may try to grow roots in those locations.
