Post by Hanazono »

I sowed seeds of some species lately.
A heating pad was used before but It is all a natural setting in this time. Pots are accommodated in a wet-box which is placed in the greenhouse. The light is sunlight.

22nd October 2022
6 pots: Ariocarpus fissuratus cv Godzilla

1st November 2022
1 pot: Uebelmannia buiningii
3 pots: Ariocarpus retusus v furfuraceus cv Suguri cauliflower

The setting is shown on the attachment.

Hi Hanazono, you place plastic over the top of the pots and put them in a closed plastic box ?

G'morning keith,

Yes it is correct. Each pot is covered by food wrapping film during the germination process. Films will be removed after the completion of germination but pots are remained in the box. Films will be kept around 3 weeks.

G'morning conophytum,
What is that soil?
The soil which you can see is top derssing, 2~4 mm Zeolite. Zeolite is cracked permeable rocks.
The top dressing is just covering over seeds. The top dressing can minimize the formation of fungi.

Hello, Hanazono,I'm here to ask modestly.

What is the effect of using a heating pad when seeding?

How do you determine the temperature with a heating pad?

I know the sensor can display the temperature, but the sensor is usually placed in the air, but is your flowerpot placed on the mat?

If the flowerpot is placed on the mat, the temperature in the flowerpot should not be consistent with the temperature displayed by the sensor, right?

So how can we determine the appropriate temperature??

G'morning Aztekium123,
What is the effect of using a heating pad when seeding?
When you used a heating pad:
Almost all sown sees start germination together.
The completion of germination of all seeds are also together. E.G. Ariocarpus and Astrophytum are 2 weeks from sown seeds.

Without a heating pad:
The timing of germination of each seed is varied.
You need for 2 months to complete the germination in my case.
How do you determine the temperature with a heating pad?

If the flowerpot is placed on the mat, the temperature in the flowerpot should not be consistent with the temperature displayed by the sensor, right?

So how can we determine the appropriate temperature??

I bought a heating pad with a thermostat. The setting of thermostat is adjustable by a volume. The thermometer is in the pod.
The critical temperature for seed germination is the temperature of top soil in the pot, not the temperatue of the pad.
From the above reason, you need the temperature calibration to simulate actual seed sowing.
I found to get 30 'C on the top soil in a pot, I had to set the pad as 33 'C.
I use the heating pad since 2005 with same pot, same soil depth, same soil materal and same mat.

Seeds of Uebelmannia buiningii have just started to germinate. I sowed seeds on 22nd October.
Seedlings are very small, less than 1 mm in diameter.

I send you a message because I think you can help, i growing a plant from seeds that are cataloged as "Miracle kabuto", the plant is around 4cm, and I read on your threads that at this size we can recognize a true miracle.

G'morning oriky,

The asterias shown on your photo is not a pure miracle kabuto. It may be mixed with a super kabuto.

An asterias shown on the bottom of photo, just a part is possibly a miracle kabuto.
I think flecking mutation will occure in future on this asterias.
