Re: Two Copiapoas without identification
Always hard...but possibly something like Copiapoa tenebrosa, or haseltonia with less strong color. If I look closely I do seem to notice some orange wool at the center.

Re: Two Copiapoas without identification
Thank you very much Jangaudi.
The two pictures are from different plants. Do you think they can be both tenebrosa or haseltonia?
Thank you
Re: Two Copiapoas without identification
I couldn't possibly know for sure, but it's possible they are the same species, given the variation margin of plants.
Re: Two Copiapoas without identification
Agree, C. haseltoniana indeed.

Many thanks Jangaudi and anttisepp!

C. haseltoniana (syn C. gigantea) usually has yellowish/orange coloured wool in the crown but does vary: -

Re: Two Copiapoas without identification
Thank you Dave. Do that means that you agree on haseltoniana and are showing tenebrosa so I can see the difference? Or you are showing me the tenebrosa to say that they are very similar and my plant can be both?DaveW wrote: ↑Sun Nov 06, 2022 12:52 pm C. haseltoniana (syn C. gigantea) usually has yellowish/orange coloured wool in the crown but does vary: -

Re: Two Copiapoas without identification
I have seen C. haseltoniana in habitat and usually the yellow/orange-tinged wool at the crown is characteristic, but never saw C. tenebrosa as to whether it had it too? We did not have time to go up Quebrada San Ramon.
A quote from the followinbg link:-
"The Ritter's name Copiapoa tenebrosa can be referred to forms within the variability of Copiapoa haseltoniana. It can be found in the mountains to the east of Taltal in two adjacent areas: Perales mountains (along populations of Copiapoa cinerea var. cinerea) and in Quebrada San Ramon (along with Copiapoa krainziana, Copiapoa cinerea and Copiapoa cinerea var. albispina ). It shows the characters of haseltoniana, but it is probably a hybrid with thinner and lesser evident spines and green to grey epidermis. The form of Q. San Ramon is particularly beautiful with orange wool with yellowish-white spines.
Both Copiapoa cinerea and Copiapoa tenebrosa in these areas shows great variation and it is sometimes difficult to separate one species from another."

You need to check your plants against the detailed descriptions in my former links.
Quebrada San Ramon from the coast up to C. krainziana at the end contains what many consider hybrid swarms of C. cinerea with other species.
