I wonder if cactus prices will fall because the economy is entering a ' new phase " after the corona lock down.

Re: cactus prices
That's a prickly subject. Don't see much news coverage on it.

Re: cactus prices
Prices are crazy, but so is the economy.
Seeds are still cheap (for the most part..), so the less plants I buy means more space for seedlings!

Re: cactus prices
Cactus prices, the same as everything else, are based on the costs to raise and distribute them, including transport on the plants from grower to retailer and transport on potting materials etc, particularly in countries where expensive heating is needed over winter.
When I started collecting in the UK in 1960 a cactus in a 2.5-inch pot off the local market stall, obviously imported from Holland, cost 2/6d in our pre-decimal money, or one eighth of a British Pound (=12.5 new pence). Mind you in those days in the Building Trade a tradesman only got £9.60p a week but there were $4 to the Pound if you bought seed from the USA!
Most cacti now seem to go around £2 here for that size from Plant Marts provided you do not pay the insane prices that EBAY advertisers ask. The $3.95 plants you show are a little larger so would probably go for £3 here.
You may find its cheaper to buy directly from a specialist cactus nursery online than off EBAY since people pay stupid prices as long as the advertiser puts "Rare" on it, even if it is not. However, watch shipping charges since for a small order it can often exceed the plants value. I heard of one UK grower who charges less for plants bought direct off his Web site than for the plants he sells on EBAY since those buying off EBAY usually know less about cacti and will pay over the odds for even common plants.
See online dealers here, though a few links are now dead.

Re: cactus prices
3.95 is probably about 7-12 dollars now. With patience you can see the price tags on the video link.

I can't speak for your area, but I noticed prices shooting up about 20 to 50 percent at local specialty C&S nurseries in Tucson even before the pandemic. I find it odd, however, that one nursery will jack up the price on certain species they perceive as rare when another one across town will have the same plants for a normal price. I guess it pays to shop around.

You hit it squarely on the head with the word, "rare." Thanks to the online sellers on certain sites, it seems as though buzz words command a thought trigger translating to cost increases--rare, exotic, endangered, etc. In the markets, this is price gouging. This was the reason I decided to convert to buying ariocarpus seed as opposed to buying specimens.

Re: cactus prices
I am suddenly getting a lot of unsolicited emails from UK Ebay Andrzej offering a special cheap selling rate for goods although I have only ever bought not sold on Ebay and never bought plants off there. Therefore, it seems they are getting a bit short of sellers for all types of goods, no doubt because buyers are fewer because of the economic situation meaning it is less profitable to advertise there as you are not selling as many?
Yet when it comes to the Stock Market it is the luxury brands shares that are still showing good profits, but evidently the rich buy watches, jewellery, clothes or expensive handbags and not cacti, even if labelled rare!

Re: cactus prices
I haven't noticed a serious increase in prices of plants at fairs, but for Ariocarpus plants. A few years back you could get a really nice Ariocarpus retusus of fist size for about 20 euros. So about one euro per year old. Now a plant like that costs at least 40 to 60 euro. Luckily it seems other plants have been on the same price range from what I have noticed in Dutch fairs and at the ELK in Belgium.
The prices of seeds have gone up steadily through the last few years, though. But knowing how much of an effort it is to clean seeds and then count them out and bag them and then post them and keeping an eye on payments, I can't really blame the seed vendors.
