Unusual Epiphyllum anguliger cutting
Unusual Epiphyllum anguliger cutting
I have two cuttings of Epiphyllum anguliger that have started growing new stems, but they seem a much different shape that the original plant, and have needles. I thought Epiphyllum anguliger didn't have needles? Has anyone seen this before?

Epiphyllums do have spines, just more obvious on young and new grows.

All forest cacti have juvenile spines in early age.

They have areoles in the axils of their leaves too on the two ribbed flattened stems, but usually the leaves are so small you need a microscope to see them. So do Schlumbergera's. In fact, all cacti initially have microscopic leaves in the growing crown.

We also used to call the flattened stems cladodes when in fact they are not, but simply two ribbed stems with a central vascular bundle and not a vascular bundle that parallels the epidermis as in a true flattened cladode like Opuntia pads.
