If you have a cactus plant and need help identifying it, this is the place to post it.

Ferocactus fordii or Echinocereus?

Post by Download »

I have this plant I grew from seeds but the label faded:

I thought it said "E... R...", and presumed it was some Echinocereus, but now it has gotten a bit bigger I'm thinking a Ferocactus. I have a F Fordii seedling that's getting to a similar size and though its still in the tubercle stage, the spines are quite similar, making me think some oddball Ferocactus.

Or an Echinopsis (or hybrid w/Lobivia).

BTW, I quit using ink on my labels (fading), and only use pencil now.

Do you know when it was sown, in what year? And do you have a record of seeds you got in that year?
Based on that list, it is a game of eliminating what it is not, and then see what names matches whatever is left on the label. Usually when you move the label a bit in some good light, you can read a bit of the faded out letters, with some luck.

This is a Ferocactus fordii seedling , 3" pot:

This was early in the season, later there were new spines with a more red color. Note how one central spine is strongly hooked, even at this young age.
