Is my cactus rare?
Is my cactus rare?
I've had this cactus for 3 years and it does not grow taller it grows wider. Produces flowers in late may/early June. Very cold hardy.

Re: Is my cactus rare?
Your fellow is from Mammillaria heyderi (it has some variations) circle, not very rare but not very usual also.
It grows large and flat and has beautiful unusual large pearl porcelain flowers. One of my favorite.

Re: Is my cactus rare?
The practical definition of rare is really what is available in your country, though some may be virtually impossible to obtain in all countries. Your plant is not hard to obtain in the UK as plants or seed, but if you are new to the hobby it is knowing where to look or having the contacts in the hobby to get things. Many of my plants when I started were obtained at meetings of the British Cactus & Succulent Society or the dealers they put me onto. Obviously most of us originally start with the plants we can find at local Garden centres or stores, but soon exhaust those sources.
For beginners the "Desert Plants of Avalon" YouTube videos may be of interest.

You may find Cactus Mall a good source of online plant or seed dealers, though some of the links may now be dead.

Whatever country you are in, if you are a beginner or even more advanced if there is a cactus society branch or club near you it is usually worth joining for the information you get. I am a member of both the British and American Societies.

It also resembles Mammillaria coahuilensis ssp. albiarmata. This subspecies is less common than the standard form in this country.
