You may come across a lot of British sites referring to John Innes (JI) soil mixed as a component for potting our plants. John Innes Horticultural Institute originally invented these soil mixes for gardeners and nurserymen as scientifically proved standard potting mixes to replace the weird and wonderful variations previously gardeners used. For Cacti & Other Succulents greater amounts of grit are usually mixed in to aid drainage in pots and speed up the soil drying.

The University of California (UC) came up with similar peat based ones that replaced soil or loam. Note JI 1-2-3 are all the same mix, its simply the amount of fertiliser added. These days commercial JI mixes simply use a normal balanced fertiliser in place of the old formula.

Now of course many use mineral mixes with pumice, lava rock and granular clay "cat litter" to replace soil based or peat based mixes altogether.

From the john Innes link , I use something like this for tomato seeds in pots today . maybe less loam more ground up fir trees.

7 Loam
3 Peat
2 Sand

For each cubic metre of mix, add
0.6kg ground limestone
1.2kg hoof and horn meal
1.2kg superphosphate
0.6kg potassium sulphate
