Supposedly a species from the genus Echinocactus, though I am struggling to identify what type. Is this even a Echinocactus? Would appreciate any opinions on this one. Cheers

Echinocereus was probably mistaken as Echinocactus. Looks very similar to Echinocereus reichenbachii subsp. armatus.
