Weird fungus?

Post by Miked »

My spineless optunia has suddenly got this weird colouring/growth at the back of it. Looks like something is oozing out of it.
Any idea what it is and how I can fix it? Images liinked below.
Thank you!!!
Mike

I've seen photo's of Opuntia with similar symptoms recently. Looks a lot like oedema. Google 'oedema' and 'opuntia' and you'll find some relevant literature. It would be good to know where you live and what your local climate is like. If you plan on posting regularly, you can mention this information in your signature. Here is already a description of oedema: https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org ... tal/oedema.
Location
Antwerp, Belgium
temperate, maritime climate with mild winters and cool summers

Agreed, and here's a good article that deals specifically with edema on succulents (this applies to cacti too):

A couple of recommendations for you, Mike. First, see this:

We're not asking for anything more than members' geographical locations -- kinda hard for us to help if we don't know where you live. Also, I'm recommending that you post photos as file attachments so it's easier for everyone here to see them. Because there's a 500k file size limit, you may have to resize your photos before posting. If you need help with that, go here:

Thank you! OK will update my signature. I wanted to post photos as file attachments but didn't realise you could do it.
Thank you again.

Yep -- here's an example of how to do it:

You can add as many photos as you'd like.
