Echinocactus green discoloration

Post by qiyao »

Hi all,
My echinocactus grusonii have some discoloration in zones where the spines grows. It has been like this in the last month. Is this normal  ? Althought the whole plant in general seems fine.

I repotted it 2 weeks and root seems fine.

Other data:
- I live in mediterranean climate
- He receives lots of light
- When reppoted I did not remove the original soil. So the soil is half nursery mix and half gritty mix (50 % soil 25% vermiculite 25% perlite)

It doesn't look bad - but you need to have a uniform mix through the entire pot. See: http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/viewtop ... =25&t=9222

Even if the nursery soil didn't contain too much peat, the rule still holds - unless you're using the same mix, you need to remove the old mix from the roots. Water may not move freely between different mixes.

It looks ok to me. The older of my two E. grusonii did something similar before corking developed on the lower part of the stem.

I second Greenknight's rec that you repot and totally free up the roots. Having a good growing medium is useless if you've got a big plug of peat encasing the roots.

You have a very nice short spine E. grusonii. I do not know the size and age of your cactus but I think it has started to develop coaking.

I agree that the short spined form of Kroenleinia grusonii (Kroenleinia grusonii f. brevispinus or f. intermedius) are some of my favorite types. They aren't just a vegetative mutation, since they keep these forms when grown from seed. The so called corking is normal.
