It is indeed an interesting looking plant.

I was able to buy some seeds labeled as Neowerdermannia lichyana from Kaktusy Cacti Growers Club Hradec Králové (www.kaktusyhk.cz) with fieldnumber VS1388 this winter. Will sow it next month. I assume it is the same plant.

Very interesting plant and description!
I have never heard of there being a correlation between Pyrrhocactus and Neowerdermannia before though.
Have I missed something there?

I think the authors were referring to morphological similarities and the fact that this new species was first tentatively named as Neowerdermannia lichyana (https://cactus-moravia.eu/uncategorized ... of-cactus/).

Genetically, Eriosyce (including Pyrrhocactus) forms a monophyletic clade that is sister with a clade that includes Parodia, Neowerdermannia, Rimacactus, and Yavia. See this portion of the cladogram found in Guerrero & al. 2019. So yes, related, but still quite removed from each other.

Very interesting, thanks for the cladogram as well!

Also very intriguing to see Neowerdermannia and Yavia in the same clade.
