Sort of a midway species between Notocactus and Malacocarpus. But placed in Notocactus rather than Malacocarpus. However if you are a "Lumper" both genera are now in Parodia.

Thank you DaveW... First time I've heard about Malacocarpus genera :shock:

I prefer notocactus, parodia means in Spanish parody, and I don't like that for naming a plant :mrgreen:

Jorge

Malacocarpus = Wigginsia
I also prefer Notocactus, Eriocactus, Brasilicactus and Wigginsia because there're very significiant differences between these genes. Let them count as they like e.g. Homo troglodytes etc after me. :mrgreen:

Yes anttisep I I believe Wigginsia is the valid name over Malacocarpus but can't find the article by Porter explaining why, but they are both names for the same genus. Malacocarpus/Wigginsia's are close to Notocactus with similar flowers but usually have more pronounced ribs. As is usual sometimes wrongly named on the Web and you will get some Notocactus named as Malacocarpus/Wigginsia and Malacocarpus/Wgginsia named Notocactus.

Jorge, Parodia was named after a person called D. Parodi. Wigginsia after somebody called Wiggins and Notocactus means southern cactus (notos = south + cactus).

And long soft fruits -> hence Malaco - carpus.

Domingo Parodi, fue un naturalista y farmacéutico italiano, activo en Sudamérica. Parodia is very diverse rich genus itself, in era of Backeberg had much more speciei but now many of them claimed as synonims. And subsequently many precious old forms are lost. :(
