Could the maximum image size be raised?

The cost for storing large files has plummeted in the last few years. I think your request for using larger images is very logical, and since the days of using dial-up have all but vanished, this site is way overdue for a timely upgrade.

Increasing image size would make it easier to post pictures. It is a bit of a chore to resize and then post.

We are not alone as modern phones and cameras are now churning out ultra large files which the Web has not kept up with. The BCSS Forum has had similar problems:-

Basically as I understood it anything of greater resolution than most forum users computer monitors can show is pointless. I have not kept up with things but they used to say in those days that most computer monitors had only had the resolution of an 8 megapixel camera, so no matter how many megapixels your camera had that's all you saw on screen?

I am sure most on here are more computer and photographic literate than I am and can tell us the equivalent resolution of todays average computer monitors and what that means for image size?

No smart phone here. I use a mirrorless camera in RAW mode and resize and edit to jpeg on the computer. Then I use https://picresize.com/ to reduce to less than 500 kb. The forum must be reducing them even more because I just uploaded a 485 kb photo and once posted is said it is 200 something Kb.

A 4k monitor has about 8 megapixels but what the forum allows is less than 1 megapixel. Besides that, if you want to zoom in on an image to study a part of it, the ultra low res images are not going to suffice, the detail is not there.

I suppose it also comes down to storage space for posted images on the forum. I have only a 10 megapixel Nikon but my pal is always buying the latest multi megapixel Nikon. However he always tells me to stick with what I've got as unless you are printing house door size images the extra megapixels (apart from cropping) are pointless for Forums or web use since you still get no better image on screen but simply larger file sizes.

He says the problem is as he has increased the megapixels in his camera upgrades the size of files and their storage has increased, meaning larger hard disks on computer or extra storage off computer. Now the humble smartphone has more megapixels than 90% of their users will ever need, but then pixel numbers sell cameras.

As to resizing pictures I shoot RAW anyway so always process the image and resize it. I know you can do it in batches but prefer to do each image separately, adjusting sharpening, contrast exposure etc. I think I resized over 800 images for my Travelogue on the BCSS site.
