When does a Tylecodon wallichii flower? What's necessary?

Post by nachtkrabb »

Since about four years I have a Tylecodon wallichii & it grows well enough. Now I am asking:
How old or big does it has to be to start flowering?
What does it need, like temperatures in summer & winter etc.pp.?

I have read in the internet:
Hardiness: Winter minimum temperature is 5ºC (41°F) but better at 8ºC (46°F). The leaves easily drop off in cool conditions.

Tylecodon wallichii blooms in summer with pretty tubular yellow flowers on longish stems. Like other tylecodons it is summer deciduous and goes dormant in the hottest weather.

The vendor at a succulent fair said:
Winter grower, needs a bright spot in the living room (all year round). Stable position (!!!) and move as little as possible.
Noted analogously & translated by me.
:-k Does that mean that the plants are summer dormant but flower during summer...?

:-k Do they actually need a cool winter to thrive & to flower...? Would 8°C / 46°F be best?
I have either a cool stairwell with usually around 14°C / 57°F which would be a pity as I wouldn't see much of the plant. Besides, there would definitely not be enough light for this light greedy creature.
Or I can offer an unheated, south-facing bedroom which is not really that cool because of the sun.

:-k As the vendor claimed you mustn't move or even turn the container of this plant I didn't, so now my plant has grown very "hunchbacked". But switching climates does mean to move the container!

:-k BTW: Is it true that they grow a caudex? On repotting I haven't seen anything like that. The plant is something like 20cm / 8in long by now.

Does someone grow a T.wallichii in a container which flowers? I would appreciate some insights.
Thank you!

This is how the plant looked when it came to me in autumn 2009. Don't have a pic of this year, sorry.
