Opuntia care in the Winter

Post by S »

We are in Northern Nevada and tonight will be 27 degrees f. In June we planted an Opuntia pad that is doing well. Will it survive a Winter here, if it is covered? How much cold can they take? Thanks

Opuntia grow naturally in your area and even further north. There are several species that will have no problem at all in the winter up there, but that is not true for all Opuntia. Where did you get it from? If it came from Wal-Mart, Home Depot, or other commercial nursery, it is probably not cold-hardy.

How big is it?
If it is more than a foot high it probably will not survive either.
All Cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are Cacti

Hi S,

As Daiv has pointed out it depends what species of Opuntia it is and it's size. I grow winter hardy Opuntia. I have close to 24 species of opuntia's that are winter hardy and a few of them are from northern nevada.
So, where did it come from? How big is it? And do ya have a picture of it or know the name of it?

If in doubt about it then cover it or take a chance and see if it survives
