You never see a yard THAT big here in SoCal!!! (without the bankroll of a Rockefeller :) )

Nice place Daiv. I too, really like the barn, has a cool charactor to it.

Will surely suck to shovel that driveway!!!

WOW i just found a map of the US ........thats almost Canada  and i would guess around a 1000 miles from the sea :? thats a huge change in environment for both you and the plants. :?

looking at the pics the landscape looks a lot like some of the sandy heathland area's around here, the old barn looks interesting........... if there's any straw in there it makes a good insulator for plants, if the cellar you are storing the plants in gets too cold packing them in some straw may help.
daiv wrote: All of these plants are indoors now. Nearly all of them are in a cold cellar to spend the winter in the dark at about 40 degrees F.
the big problems will come in spring and autumn with that system, both in knowing when to get them in and out of storage and protecting them from early frosts in autumn and late frosts in spring.........i feel a heated greenhouse in the planning stages  even so if my guess is right you may still have to go for the "wrapped up in the dark method" for the midwinter period depending on just how cold the winters are there, a greenhouse by its very nature is not designed to store heat in winter........single glazed, no insulation, no draft proofing ect ect, a lot of growers over here insulate with layers of that bubble wrap that's used to protect things in the post or twin wall polycarbonate sheets.

you might find this topic interesting.

http://www.bcss.org.uk/forum/read.php?30,65244

i put all mine in the double glazed insulated electrically heated conservatory for the winter so i don't have to go to all that trouble 8)

your sunrise sunset times look very similar to ours

http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneYear.php

min temps here are around -7 to -10 deg C (16 to 20 deg F)..........although we are on a similar latitude to your new home (as daylight chart demonstrates)temps here are kept higher by the warming effect of the gulf stream and proximity to the sea. i found a website with your min winter temps on it   i don't think i could live anywhere that gets that cold :?

i guess there must be a house there somewhere....... if not the barn could get a bit crowded

if thats the outside toilet in the yard view .......boy are you in trouble

Ha ha! good comments all!

Tony, no farming, but an Equine critter may be a possibility in the future -we will see. If it is, I'd just work with the rescue center and take in an orphan.

Hob, the Greenhouse link is helpful. I was looking at an outdoor "corn furnace" for heat:
http://www.thecornburner.com/index.htm

Lots of corn around here.

Yeah it gets really cold around here. We are boarder-line USDA Zone 3/Zone 4 Been more of a zone 4 in recent years, but that can change pretty quick.

That is indeed an "Outdoor John" as they're called around here, but it is a remnant that is not used anymore although the "hole" remains fully functional and there is a roll of TP in a coffee can.

That barn has potential if its not already in use..

You could remove the roof and cover is with transparent corrigated plastic and you have a cheap easy green house.
