i understand that cacti live a long long time, just how long do they live?

how can one estimate the worth of a cactus?

Impossible to answer the first part of your question apart from the rough guide line that the larger the cactus the longer it will live. Many of the larger desert cacti, could be around the 100 year mark.
Some of the small Rebutias etc. will have died before a larger plant has even reached maturity. However it is nothing to worry about as most cacti will live a reasonably long time and will have either produced offsets or seeds long before they expire.

Regarding the value, I take it you mean price. Again a good rule of thumb is how rare the plant is, or how difficult it is to obtain in your part of the world. The Cacti nurseries seem to go in phases, one year they will have a particular species of cacti coming out of their ears. The next year you can't get one for love nor money.
