How to distinguish between 2 Browningias?

Post by JillM »

I have a cactus that I believe is either Browningia hertlingiana or Stetsonia coryne. Does anyone know how to distinguish between the two? Do I need to wait for it to flower?

Well to start S. coryne is far more pouplar in cultivation than B. hertlingiana. If your plant came from a nursery at WalMart or Home Depot, Armstrong's or the like, then you've got S. coryne. If you are not sure about the origin, then use this info:

B. hertlingiana has pale blue-green stems. The spines are yellowish gray. There are 1-3 central spines, 3.1 inches long. Radial spines as many as 4-6.

S. coryne also has blue-green stems, but are more green than blue. Spines are yellow, becoming black, stiff, heavy, straight. One central spine. Radial spines 7-9, spreading.

The above are mostly descriptions from Anderson's book. The main feature you'll want to check is the central spine. Hope this helps!
