Just an idea

Post by DieTer-Xz »

Why not organize a picture competition on CactiGuide? It would be a lot of fun.

I think you brought this up before. It is a swell Idea. Let's hash out the rules. Here are some that I thought of.

1. Only one picture per person. (that way we can do it more often.)

2. Set time limits -Set one week for entries. If you miss it, then you can get in on the next one. Allow two weeks to take votes.

3. Should we assign a class or theme? It could be a genus or columnars only, or cacti in X sized pots, flowering plants only/non-flowering -we could do anything.

Anybody else have some input on this?

- I totally agree on rule one.
- About rule two, two weeks for entries and two weeks to take votes, Picture of the Month? Will there be a jury or does everyone get to vote? (Last seems fair.)
- Yes, it is a very good idea to assign a class, otherwise, it'll be difficult to vote.
- No voting on your own picture.
- How about a special page on CactiGuide, with the pictures of the winners, a Hall of Fame?

Sounds like a neat idea for no other reason because I like looking at cacti photos.
But alas, I fill a little left out because I don't grow cacti in pots and I only actually grow one genus of cacti. But then again my collection is my choose and I love them :D
Of course there could be a class-- Grown in Ground Cold Hardies

That's right bill, and even if you don't have a picture in every one, you can still vote.

Die-Ter. that?s a great idea. Sounds Fun.

Daiv, I think that with only one class we can have a monthly contest. So, it doesn?t matter if the cacti is columnar or flowering.. people will vote for their favorite.

By the other hand, we should make explicit on the carachteristics that will it be taked in count for qualify a picture.
Wich ones?
-Quality of the picture (technique)
-Originality (moment or the species of cacti)
-Composition (a cacti in landscape or a particular siutuation)

Definetively, sounds fun.

I love the idea. As a frequent vistor to the site, but with not much to add because I'm a newbie at cacti keeping, I look forward to seeing (and voting on) everyone's pics.

May I also suggest categories such as best group or pair; best cacti surroundings; most original location, the list could go on.

Wow, lots of great feedback! You really were on to something Author DieTer. Let's do this. Keep taking in suggestions on this post through the end of the week. Then on the weekend, I'll put together all the ideas in one big post and we can start the first one on Monday if everything works out.

Buck, I can see doing a succulent one too, but let's do cacti on the first one and see how it goes.

Just realized I did not yet participate in this conversation :D Of course, I support the idea, I would gladly vote if I do not have any picture meeting the requirements. I got a brand new camera for Christmas so I might even participate in the pictures contest !
