Good day aye from Canada

Post by damarech »

I am a new member, who has been stricken by another obsession, cacti. As it was for fish, started with a goldfish in a bowl.I now have 10 tanks.I bought a cactus and already have 15 plants. This is going to be trouble.I can see it all now.I may have bit off more than I can chew this time. But I guess only time will tell just how bad this will get.

Yes, still have a few silver dollars, rasboras, a hand full of other small stuff and a large 10+ year old Synodontis njassae still hanging on from my, all african cichlid all the time stage
This set up works very well for raising cacti from seed.
Of coarse you dont really need the aquarium part but its a quick and easy way to start. no need for expensive fancy lighting here just 40 watt cool white flourescents.

Also a warm welcome from the Sun City El Paso, Texas at the border to Mexico. I hope, that you are going to find this forum quite interesting and also informative.
By the way, your talk about turning an aquarium into a place to grow cacti from seed is a very good idea. I do have an unused terrarium sitting around somewhere in my house and also a grow light - albeit not with fluorescent cool properties. Cactus seed I do have in large quantities, because most of my plants do produce it.
Maybe I should also join the fun and give growing from seed a try.

Welcome from me too! You may be surprised to learn you're not the only Canadian on the forum and that they grow some cacti outside year round.

On a recent trip to the Badlands in Alberta I was quite surprised to see that this area was desert like. There was all kinds of plants that grew there.Sage was the most common as well as a type prickly pear and cute little button cactus.Maybe I can dig up some pics and post them.

Great landscape!

The Opuntia looks like a fragilis x polyacantha maybe?
It's an awesome plant!

The other, perhaps an Escobaria?

Wow! I wasn't telling you anything there! Really cool that you already had those pics. You must have an eye for detail too as those Escobaria are not at all conspicuous!
