I asked Buck to pick the category for this go around. His response was:
I'm convinced that the genus Echinopsis has the most varied and beautiful blooms in the cacti world. So I think we should have the nexy category to be "Echinopsis and their blooms".
I agree, this should make a good contest. So...

Post all your pictures for "Echinopsis and Their Blooms" Contest Number 2 in this thread.

UPDATE: I overlooked the diversity of plants that have been given the name "Echinopsis" either now or in the past and the great number of Hybrids of the genera as well. For this contest we will go with the broad definition of Echinopsis including those plants also known as Lobivia, Trichocereus, etc. and allow hybrids as well.

Feb 12 through March 5

You have Until February 26, 2006 to enter a picture in the contest

Voting will be from February 27 to March 5

See "Announcement: Rules for the Cactus Picture Contest" post for updated rules.

Here is a picture of my favourite - an Echinopsis hybrid that rewards me with a crop of long, slender-tubed, large pink flowers every year:

Echinopsis subdenudata

Not a genus I have ever concentrated on, but this species certainly gives a lot of flower for a small plant. There are some beautiful flowers already in the contest. I am sure that mine will not win, (not false modesty) but to everyone else who thinks the same about their plants, put them up and just let everyone enjoy them. They are all winners anyway.

Here's one for the taxonimists.
Lobivia jajoiana v nigrastomata
From seed of MN30, a Mats Winberg collection at Tilcara, Jujuy, Argentina

Current classifications appear to submerge it into E. pentlandii or E. marsoneri

I don't know what impresses me more, the 5-6" spines or the shocking flower show.

I had no idea how many pics I had. Following is a picture of a hybrid growing at the Jurupa Mountains Cultural Center in Riverside, CA. This plant has been the subject of at least 100 of my pictures.

If you want, take a look at this page (I didn't want to take any more of Daiv's space). These were the finalists. Sorry, the page is pretty big, so it takes a while to load.

Many of these were taken at the Cultural Center. Its a worth while trip, their cactus nursery is second to none.

Hi All,

Maybe this one is not a typical Echinopsis flower, but what amazing colours - Echinopsis pugionacantha (Lobivia cornuta):
