Re: Echinocereus Blooms 2012
In my opinion, and from my experience with Echinocereus they usually bloom during the day. At night, if it's too cold, or if it is cloudy they tend to close. There are of course exceptions to the rule, like Tristian's plant, but for the most part they are all day bloomers.
As an aside Echinocereus root easily.
If I get any extras Marten I will keep you in mind.

Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.

Re: Echinocereus Blooms 2012
Thanks for sharing. Echinos are fast becoming my favorite flowers, so I hope to collect more of them and try a couple of winter hardy ones here in Vermont.
Catch a falling star--but don't try it with a cactus!
Re: Echinocereus Blooms 2012
Hello Martin,
I too am a big fan of Echinocereus spp. and do have a decent collection. A lot of them, however, are not yet of flowering size. I am wondering about the scientific name of some of your plants. Is the first one an E. stramineus? The flower seems to be huge and the color matches.
Number 5 is also very interesting. Is that an E. pectinatus? (Arizona Rainbow?) with somewhat pale coloration?
I also like numbers 6, 8 and 9 and am not able to place names with them. Do you know what they are called?

Great flowers & variety, Martin! Makes it easier for me to focus on cacti, esp Echino's that I can grow -- not what I can't Longiseta's going into next round of propagation -- love anything hairy! My (one summer) experience with the Echino's that I have are they tend to be pretty sun-senitive to flowering -- close @ end of day & don't fully open on cloudy days.

Way to represent the genus Martin. Have you considered collecting all the species? I don't think you have too far to go.

Hey Daiv, how are you? Yeah I have thought about it, but I know there's always going to be 2 or 3 that I would not be able to get, just like when I tried to get all of the ferocactus species. Mark Sitter from BB Cactus farm told me that I have all the species he has so that's kinda cool.

Well it isn't as if your current collection is lacking. It really is swell.
So which Fero species are you missing?

Man, Martin, if you've got it down to one hand (of fingers), just live longer & I'm sure you'll get there!

Those are some harder ones for sure, but they are out there. For sure you should be able to get seed. I've got 3 F. reppenhagenii coming up from seed.

Amazing display!
But you need to get those IDs straight Almost half of them are off.
