Eriosyce seedlings

Post by mcdieimp »

First attempt at growing seedlings for a long time. Used the baggie method on a windowsill in June.

Probably took them out a little too soon but seem okay at the moment. I suspect the soil will be a little rich but keeping my fingers cross...

They grow faster in humid conditions.
You can still keep them in the bag but if you took them out of the bag long time ago, they can use their humid tolerance and they rot so be careful about it.
Dont repot them at least until they reach 1 year old, according to my experience if you move them early most of them stress and rot.

Thanks, they've been out for a while now so I'll have to leave them and see how they cope with the British winter...

They look very happy and healthy...
Keep them that nice green colour and they will grow well although slowly.
After two years they generally pick up the pace.

Good luck!

Wow, those are slow growing. What Eriosyce species are those seedlings.

They look good to me!
Slow and steady, with minimal mortality, isn't a bad way to go, especially with miniature species.

You may find Eriosyce seed with a greater range of species a bit cheaper on SuccSeed's list than EBAY since they had a lot of seed originally from Fred Katterman (FK numbers) to produce their stock plants, also some from Roger Ferryman (RMF numbers). However I don't know how post and packing costs compare, which always have to be taken into account. These days PayPal takes care of currency conversions in seed from abroad.

Hi Dave, I usually go with Mesa for seeds. Never bought cactus seeds on Ebay too expensive or from Europe too complicated . I have been know to sell on Ebay from time to time though. it can be a PITA sometimes to sell but I deal with it.

I have no affiliation to the ebay seller i posted above, but can't fault them on the seeds I've received to date. I also sowed E. heinrichiana in the summer and although less germinated, currently looking good.

I've got a few others germinating now and will post pictures if they're successful.

So 12 hours a day under 25/50w led light seems to be doing them some good. The spines are now coming through nicely. A few more months before I risk repotting them though.
