Hi everyone,
I'm looking to replace some long-suffering Nandina with some moderate-height (2-5 feet or so) cacti. They'll be in half a day's sun here in Tucson (hot and bright!!) and our winters typically bottom out in the low-mid 20s F; I'd prefer no protection required but I can do it easily if something is pretty enough. The space for the cacti is about 2x8; the rest of the bed has some Agave and Yucca.
Here are a couple ideas I've had:
Oreocereus celsianus - they've got a few 2-footers locally available.
Echinopsis hybrid(s) - are there any fat ones that don't fall over?
I'm trying to steer clear of the "typical" stuff down here; e.g. Pachycereus marginatus, P. schotti, C. peruvianus, etc. I like having the only cool plants on the street
Thanks for looking! If you need any help picking some uncommon Agave........let me know
Columnar recommendations....?

What about some of the more 'unusual' species of Stenocereus? Some, like alamoensis & beneckii are really striking in landscaping. They do do some "drooping" sometimes, so not sure if you are only looking for species that are completely erect all the time.

How hardy is Echinopsis atacamensis? I don't recall having seen this one for sale anywhere? I'm at about 1600 feet elevation east of 29 Palms, our winters are usually a bit warmer than Tucson's.m4rkz0r wrote:How about a terschekii? or one of the other thick columnar echinopsis?

E. atacamensis looks interesting, they say its wood is good for furniture so it may be more structurally strong and won't fall over like terschekii is known for?
