Cacti collection in Cyprus
Re: Cacti collection in Cyprus
Two weeks ago (4th of March'21) I sowed different cacti seeds, one of them were Gymnocalycium Mihanovichii variegata.
A week ago (12th of March'21) I have them sprouted. These are 7 days old seedlings. Can't count them, they are too small. Bought them on Etsy from Thailand. It has to be 50 seeds. Will count seedlings later when they grow bigger

Re: Cacti collection in Cyprus
Cool Gymnocalyciums! I have only seven species (23 plants) and only G.horstii from your photos. Also I have ordered two seedlings of G.ragonesei and waiting for delivery. It's frosty now so seller will send me plants at the end of the month. Looking forward for that.
Regarding the seedlings. They are green. Is it normal for variegated plants? Or they should be with colored stains and not whole plant should be red/yellow?

G.horstii was one of my favorite. Maybe too favorite so I watered it way too often.A1essandro wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 5:26 pm Cool Gymnocalyciums! I expect seedlings to have variety of different colored parts but it's my first experience with both seeds and a seller. Pictures provided by seller were these in attachment. I hope it's true and I will have something like that

Re: Cacti collection in Cyprus
That's not one nursery, that's ONLY nursery we have 90% of my cacti from there. On their website they don't have even 10% of what they have in a nursery. And prices are extremely low.anttisepp wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 6:14 pm Hello, I know one Cyprus nursery in Lympia / Central Cyprus, maybe you're interested (maybe already know).

Gymnocalyciums from photo look really cool. I hope that your seedlings will be same. I thought that variegated plants are some deviation and cannot pass via seeds.

Thank you! It's a pretty good chance they will. Variegation is a form of genetic mutation that can be easily passed.A1essandro wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 4:44 am Gymnocalyciums from photo look really cool. I hope that your seedlings will be same. It's been a heavy sandstorm in Cyprus for two days and we will probably have it until tomorrow.
The wind brought us a lot of sand and a dry heat from Africa. Since I don't have a greenhouse I took all the plants inside and can enjoy looking at them all the time
There's a small collection of different Tephrocactus. I love this cacti genera very much but I need to learn how to make them feel better. Still trying to understand them. I have most of them for a year and they didn't give any new stems. I think I might do it wrong because they just don't grow.

Tephrocacti need lot of sun and warmth to grow. My two plants often skip a season or two till producing the next top segment. I thought in Cyprus conditions for them will be almost perfect.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

Re: Cacti collection in Cyprus
Much space for roots, enough watering, much sun.
Most of them are very unpretencious as all opuntias.

I thought like that too. But they burn and shrivel all the time, in fact I need to shade them to keep them alive

Re: Cacti collection in Cyprus
My biggest Astrophytum Ornatum variegated was in bloom recently. The flowers were gigantic. Ornatums one of my favorite Astrophytum species because of the size, different shapes and a speed of growing.

I've also discovered that Astrophytum I posted here as a noname a month ago seems to carry kikko khoyo gene because it bacame yellow in the middle. I bought it for peanuts in a local greenhouse. I suppose they didn't have any idea about what exactly the sell and I'm so glad this Astrophytum catched my eye

G'morning k. maks,
It is still young but Kikko starts from rib top. Rib tops on your photo are smooth.
Rokkotsu starts from rib bottoms as shown on your photo.
Rokkotsu means costae.
