OK, the poll has officially closed. (I always wait until the next day to announce that just to make sure.)
My reaction is WOW! What a contest. We had almost 50 votes spread thinly across some really great shots. This is a category that we must repeat. Spines are the best known feature of cacti and so I guess it makes sense.
GeneS has taken first by one vote over a three-way tie for 2nd place by Bill, Bill, and Harald!
Excellent contest everyone -congratulations to GeneS who is our first two-time winner!

Thanks to all, but I do believe that Daiv should call this one a 4 way tie. As an analyst by profession, I think the the voting was too close to be statisticly valid, but, like our current US President, I guess I'll take it:-)
We should all express a well deserved, well done to all entrants!!
The contest had so many potential, and actual, interpretations that the entries became like statements of each person's point of view. Are spines delicate, intricate constructions like M. plumosa, or M. matudae, or are they large protective weapons such as Ferocactus or Echinocactus?? Or something else entirely such as a shade mechanism or place to park for polinators?
My preference is, obviously, the heavily spined plants. In fact, my very favorite spiny thing is in the picture below. I just thought the F. townsendianus had more artistic appeal.
Cheers ... GeneS

It's not complete yet but I have begun a gallery of Feros at my photo site. Just a few teaser images, including a high res view of the same plant I entered in the contest.love the spination of these Feros you've been posting for me to drool over.

Lots of plants now blooming and setting fruit - my only problem is that I am working 16 hr days on a project and have had almost no time to "stop and enjoy the flowers". Most have long closed by the time I get home.
Not hardy enough for your area without greenhouse protection. The Feros of the upper Sonoran and Mohave desert can take some frost and even snow but not the continued cold & wet you get in fall/winter.I know theres a big difference in our climates but just how hardy are the Fero's.
The Baja plants are right at home in my yard but some of the central Mexico plants (macrodiscus, lindseyi) are quite tender, especially when young, so I can't leave them out here without risk of loss.
There are quite a few that make good pot specimens and bloom at smaller sizes that are suitable for gh culture. Just move them out into full sun when the frost danger has passed.
