A few Astrophytum crosses

Post by BarryRice »

Hey Guys,

From this season's crosses, I have a few leftovers...

1) Astrophytum myriostigma (typical) x myriostigma var. quadricostatum--about 49 seeds.

2) Astrophytum myriostigma var. quadricostatum x myriostigma (typical)--about 33 seeds.

3) Astrophytum myriostigma var. quadricostatum x capricorne--about 42 seeds.

Note that #1, 2 are simply reverse crosses. Same parents, just gender roles switched. Many, but not all, of the seedlings are coming up four-lobed. I do not know if this trait will be stable as the plants mature.

I've done germination experiments and found viability to be 90% or higher for all three crosses.

USA folks only, as I don't care to deal with international shipping. If you're interested pm me. I'd like about $2 per packet to cover padded envelope and shipping. I'm not going to subdivide the packets.

Cheers

Barry
I'll grow it as long as it doesn't have glochids. Gaudy flowers a plus.

Here is a super opportunity for anyone who is wanting to have a try at growing from seeds. Astrophytums have big seeds which germinate quickly, typically in about 3 days for me. They give large seedlings which are not really difficult to care for. These seeds are of known provenance and have been germination tested at approx. 90%. So, as we say in the UK, "Dip your bread in"
