I'll get us started on this one with Grusonia invicta from my recent trip to Baja.

I checked plant after plant hoping to find one that was just a little early on blooming, but this is the closest I got. Many buds, but they all did a good job sychronizing their watches.

Here's a cholla from Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in southern AZ, Cylindropuntia echinocarpa:

I wanted to post C. viridiflorus in flower but that will have to wait until July.

Here's Maihueniopsis minuta 'mandragora' photoed today. I'd noticed lots of the spines had a drop of liquid which I've assumed is nectar-like, but I'm not brave enough to lick it! (thumbnail)

Tacinga palmadora in bloom . . .

Post by Burggraaf »

Such a difficult choice to make for me as I am an Opuntia collector. Alast, I have chosen from one of my rarest (in the sense that it is difficult to find). Here is my Tacinga palmadora in bloom. This species hails from Brazil, but I found it at a local funeral home (the original plant has since been destroyed!) The flower of this Opuntioideae is a bit unusual in that in full sun it opens wide (flat across) and individual blooms will open-and-close several days in a row. My plant is only a few feet high, but the original was easily 15 feet high and 20 feet across.

Here is one of my prickly pear plants identified by a forum member some time ago as Opuntia orbiculata.

I found this wicked specimen growing in the back lot. I'm not sure if it's a chainfruit or a teddy bear cholla. Ouch!
