Weird Gymnocalycium variegation?
Weird Gymnocalycium variegation?
Well, maybe variegation.
I spotted this about a month back at a nursery. I thought it was horribly sunburnt and passed on it, but a few weeks later I came back and the plant hadn't scarred. So, not sunburn.
Still, I've never seen variegation like this before. I thought it might be yellow variegation mixed in with sun bleaching perhaps, but I have no clue.
I'd like to hear other people's thoughts.

Doesn't look like variegation of any kind to me. Though I cannot say what it is.

Beginning of corking due to previous sunburn ?

Perhaps needs a good drink of water? Desiccated.

Looks like sunburn to me. Sunburn will not necessarily kill the plant, it can grow out if the growing point is not damaged. However it may take a few years until all the scar tissue finishes down the base of the plant.

I'm agreeing with DaveW on the sunburn diagnosis.

It's definitely not sunburn. I am familiar with sunburnt cactus.
It's also pink around the edges.

It could be the tissue was damaged due to previous sunburn, and started corking afterward, which results in this. There's green to be seen at the growing point, and between the ribs, so it's growing out of it.

This Melo got sunburned 1 year ago. It just started to grow again. Takes time for recovery sometimes.
