Kyle Barker notes:
Some key points to what separate Lophophora williamsii from the other Lophophora species.
Stem Morphology:
Growth Habit: Often solitary until larger. Seems to usually start offsetting when 5-7cm diameter, but often does so from the base where the transition from stem to roots happens.
Skin Colour: Greyish-green.
Rib Form: Straight or spiraling, not often wavy, usually follows a straight-ish form.
Number of ribs5,8 & 13 ribs.
Areoles: Closer together than L. diffusa, much liek L> fricii. often 1-2cm apart.
Flower/Fruit Morphology & Reproduction
Petal Colour: light-medium pink
Petal Shape: rounded at tip.
Style colour: white-pink
Filament colour: white
Fruit Colour: light pink
# of seeds per fruit (averages): 0-15
Reproduction: self-fertile. can produce viable seed by itself.
Readily Hybridizes with: So far we have had little luck, however I did manage to get a L. fricii to produce 5 seeds in one fruit from L. williamsii pollen. only 2 germinated and only one is still alive, so we will find out later if it was a cross or if the L. fricii just self pollinated.
Key characteristics that define this species from others.
self fertile, no other Lophophora is.
main alkaloid is mescaline, whereas other Lophophora are pellotine.
Does not cross with any other Lophohpora species.
Produces far fewer seeds than other species, and seed testa/hillum re unique.
Pink rounded petals, other species are generally more pointed.
does not produce 21 ribs.
